Losing your phone contacts can disrupt communication with family, friends, and work associates. Thankfully, Google automatically backs up your contacts to the cloud, making recovery straightforward.

Confirm Your Contacts Are Saved in Google

Before attempting recovery, verify your contacts are stored in your Google account:

  • Visit contacts.google.com and log in to see your saved contacts.
  • Alternatively, open Gmail, click the Google Apps icon (nine dots), and select Google Contacts.

Import Contacts to Android

If your Google account sync is enabled, contacts appear automatically on your Android device once signed in. If not, follow these steps:

  • Open Settings and go to Accounts or Accounts and Backup.
  • Select your Google account, then tap Sync Account or Sync Now.
  • Ensure the Contacts toggle is enabled to start synchronization.

For new or reset phones, you can restore contacts from a Google backup via Settings > Google > Backup & restore > Restore contacts.

Recover Deleted Contacts Using "Undo Changes"

Google retains deleted contacts for 30 days, allowing you to undo changes made within this period:

  • On a computer, visit contacts.google.com, click the gear icon, choose Undo Changes, and select a restore point up to 30 days prior.
  • On Android, open the Contacts app, tap your profile picture, go to Contacts settings, and select Undo changes.

Be cautious as restoring overwrites current contacts, potentially removing recently added entries.

Restore Contacts from Trash

For individually deleted contacts, check the Trash folder on Google Contacts. Select contacts to recover them back to your account. Note that Trash is emptied after 30 days.

Sync Google Contacts to iPhone

To import Google contacts on iPhone without third-party apps:

  • Go to Settings > Contacts > Accounts > Add Account > Google.
  • Sign in and enable the Contacts toggle.
  • Open the Contacts app and select the Gmail group to view synced contacts.

Ensure the Contacts toggle remains on to keep syncing updated.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • If contacts don’t show after syncing, verify sync is enabled in account settings.
  • Contacts deleted over 30 days ago cannot be recovered unless backed up separately.
  • Restored contacts do not create duplicates, but using Undo Changes may remove newer contacts added after the restore point.

Regularly backing up contacts as .VCF or CSV files is recommended for additional security.
