The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has set February 10, 2027, as the final date for public officers who intend to run in the August 10, 2027, General Election to resign from their positions. This deadline, exactly six months before Election Day, marks a critical step in the election timeline.

Key Timelines for Political Parties and Candidates

  • By October 15, 2026, political parties must submit authorized persons and specimen signatures.
  • Nomination rules must be certified by the Registrar of Political Parties by October 30 and submitted to IEBC by November 6.
  • Party membership lists and details of candidates participating in primaries, including dates and venues, are due by March 16, 2027.
  • All party primaries and related disputes must conclude by May 8, 2027.
  • Independent candidates must also submit their names and symbols by May 8.
  • Presidential aspirants have until May 24 to provide names, signatures, and identification of at least 2,000 registered voters in a majority of counties.
  • Candidate registration runs from May 29 to June 11, varying by elective position.
  • The official campaign period starts upon candidate registration but no earlier than May 29 and ends on August 7, 48 hours before Election Day.

IEBC Stresses Compliance and Legal Obligations

The Commission emphasized that these timelines are legally binding and non-negotiable to ensure an orderly and credible electoral process. It warned that any campaigning outside the designated period, including posters, caravans, and billboards, will be considered unlawful.

IEBC pledged to enforce electoral laws strictly and urged all political stakeholders to adhere to the requirements to uphold the integrity of the 2027 polls.
