The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced that the 2027 General Election will use the same six ballot paper colours familiar to Kenyan voters from previous elections.
The decision, confirmed on August 12, 2026, ensures continuity and reduces voter confusion at polling stations. The colours are as follows:
- Presidential ballot: White
- Governor ballot: Sky blue
- Senator ballot: Yellow
- Woman Representative ballot: Purple
- Member of the National Assembly ballot: Green
- Member of the County Assembly ballot: Beige/Brown
Each ballot paper colour corresponds to a matching ballot box lid, a system introduced after the 2010 Constitution to guide voters through the increased number of elective positions. This arrangement has been consistent since 2013, helping to reduce stray votes, especially in areas with lower literacy.
Prior to the 2010 constitutional changes, Kenya had fewer elective seats and used only three ballot colours during elections, such as in 2007 when the Electoral Commission of Kenya managed Presidential, Parliamentary, and Civic ballots in white, green, and blue respectively.
To accommodate visually impaired voters, the IEBC will provide specialized voting aids, including tactile devices and Braille overlays, supported by trained officials. These measures align with the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) Act 2025, promoting independent and accessible voting for all Kenyans.
