Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are investigating the fatal shooting of Victoria Mutiso, a respected Kenyan mental health scholar, in Nairobi on the morning of July 29, 2026. The incident occurred at approximately 9 a.m. at the intersection of Mbagathi Link Road and Mauenzi Road.
Eyewitness accounts describe a coordinated attack involving an SUV and a motorcycle. According to Joram Olasi, a nearby security guard, three individuals on a motorbike passed the scene before gunshots were fired. The assailant shot Mutiso twice at close range and then fled on the motorbike, while the SUV sped away.
Mutiso was in a taxi at the time, which was immediately driven to Kenyatta National Hospital. She was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Ongoing Investigation
- The victim’s taxi has been impounded for forensic analysis, with ballistic experts recovering two bullet casings from inside the vehicle.
- Mobile phones belonging to Mutiso and her driver are being examined to reconstruct communications prior to the attack.
- Police have interrogated Mutiso’s husband and the taxi driver as part of the inquiry.

Authorities are also exploring the possibility that the killing was linked to prior death threats Mutiso reportedly made to police at Kilimani and Satellite stations. The victim’s colleagues and family have been interviewed to help determine a motive for the killing.
Victoria Mutiso was a director at the Africa Institute of Mental and Brain Health and a prominent researcher in her field. Her body remains at Kenyatta National Hospital morgue pending a post-mortem examination.
