Irungu Nyakera, a politician from the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), has officially pulled out of the Nairobi gubernatorial race to contest for the Makadara parliamentary seat in the 2027 General Election.
On Monday, August 17, 2026, Nyakera announced the shift in his political ambitions, citing consultations with his political mentors and appeals from Makadara residents urging him to represent their constituency.
Decision Influenced by Community and Mentors
"After engaging with my political mentors and listening to the people of Makadara who have asked me to come home and serve as their Member of Parliament, I have decided to focus on the Makadara Constituency instead of the Nairobi governor race," Nyakera stated.
Meeting with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua
Nyakera made the announcement following a visit to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at his Wamunyoro residence. Accompanied by a delegation from Makadara, Nyakera expressed gratitude for Gachagua’s political mentorship and support.
"I thank him for his guidance and blessings as I embark on this new journey to become Makadara’s next MP under the DCP banner," Nyakera said. He concluded by addressing Makadara residents directly: "My brothers and sisters of Makadara, I have heard you. I am coming back home!"
From City Hall Aspirations to Constituency Politics
Earlier in 2026, Nyakera had unveiled plans aimed at improving Nairobi’s business environment, including addressing investor concerns about levies, licensing delays, and infrastructure. His shift to contest the Makadara seat marks a redirection from citywide governance ambitions to constituency-level representation.

Makadara Parliamentary Race Heats Up
Nyakera’s entry is expected to intensify competition for the Makadara parliamentary seat as political parties prepare for the 2027 elections. His move follows internal DCP discussions over Nairobi political strategies, with other party figures like James Gakuya linked to the gubernatorial contest.
Nyakera now aims to secure the DCP ticket and consolidate support within Makadara ahead of the polls.
