American Airlines and its regional partners experienced a temporary nationwide ground stop on Tuesday evening caused by an information technology outage.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) implemented the halt at approximately 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time, which was lifted less than an hour later at 7:18 p.m., allowing flights to resume.

This disruption delayed hundreds of departures amid already challenging conditions on the U.S. East Coast, where thunderstorms had caused significant flight delays and ground stops.

American Airlines confirmed the restoration of its systems and apologized to passengers affected by the interruption, stating that the ground stop was a precaution while technical teams worked to fix the issue.

Flight Impact

  • Flight tracking data from FlightAware showed that 1,100 flights operated by American Airlines were delayed, representing about 30% of their scheduled departures on Tuesday.
  • Additionally, 221 flights, or 6%, were canceled during the outage.
  • Flightradar24 reported that at 7 p.m. ET, there were 130 fewer flights airborne compared to the same time the previous week.

The brief IT failure highlights the vulnerability of airline operations to technical disruptions, especially during periods of adverse weather conditions.
