Gugu Gumede, who plays Joyce Gomora in Netflix's The Polygamist, has revealed the personal health crisis that motivated her to lose 53kg before landing the role.

In an interview with CNN's African Voices, Gumede explained that her decision to undergo weight loss surgery was sparked by her experience as a primary caregiver to her mother, who suffered a major stroke in 2014 and later died from COVID-19 complications.

"I witnessed firsthand the impact of hypertension," Gumede said. "That was a frightening reality I had to confront." She emphasized that the surgery was about survival rather than conforming to entertainment industry standards.

Now over two years post-surgery, Gumede credits her faith for the positive changes in her life and career. She quoted scripture, saying, "Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things shall be added," linking her health journey to new professional opportunities.

During the CNN interview, Gumede’s co-star S’dumo Mtshali also spoke candidly, humorously accepting the label of Netflix’s "most hated man" and calling on the streaming giant to continue supporting African stories and talent.
