National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed has alleged that Members of Parliament received payments during the 2024 impeachment proceedings against former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Speaking at an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and United Democratic Alliance (UDA) joint rally in Malava, Kakamega County, on July 26, 2026, Junet revealed that funds were disbursed through an accounting officer identified as a legislator named Cheruiyot.
"When we were impeaching Gachagua, money was moving in Parliament. The accounting officer managing these funds was Cheruiyot," Junet said, urging those who benefited to invest in proper housing instead of wasting the money in Nairobi.
He also criticized the absence of Kakamega MPs at the rally, noting that they were aligned with Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, a key figure in the broad-based government coalition.
Rejecting Alliance with Gachagua
Junet firmly dismissed any political alignment with Gachagua, emphasizing that the spirit of ODM leader Raila Odinga could not coexist with the former deputy president.
"The spirit of Baba (Raila Odinga) cannot share space with Gachagua," Junet declared, praising leaders like Oparanya for upholding that spirit and rallying the Kakamega MPs behind the broad-based government.
He challenged the crowd, asking who was willing to follow Gachagua, labeling the idea as mere bribery.
Background on Impeachment
- Gachagua was impeached by the National Assembly in October 2024 and subsequently removed by the Senate.
- The courts upheld the impeachment decision.
- Junet’s revelations mark one of the clearest acknowledgments that financial incentives influenced the impeachment vote.
The rally was part of ODM and UDA’s efforts to demonstrate unity ahead of the 2027 general elections. Junet concluded by affirming ODM’s commitment to the broad-based coalition.
