Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi has issued a stern warning to Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku against attempts to create political divisions within the Mt Kenya region.

Speaking during the inauguration of a DP office in Nanyuki on July 25, 2026, Muturi condemned efforts to pit Mt Kenya East against Mt Kenya West, describing such moves as detrimental and unlikely to succeed. He emphasized that the people of Mt Kenya will ultimately determine their political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Muturi accused Ruku of fostering regional fragmentation as part of his campaign to support President William Ruto’s re-election bid. He dismissed claims that Mt Kenya East alone could deliver the votes needed for Ruto, warning that no single leader has the authority to dictate the region’s political future.

Earlier in July, CS Geoffrey Ruku declared that the two million votes from Mt Kenya East would suffice to secure President Ruto another term without depending on Mt Kenya West’s support. Ruku also revealed plans to back Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s presidential aspirations starting in 2028.

Muturi rejected this approach, insisting that Mt Kenya residents must freely choose their leaders without imposed divisions. His statements highlight a growing rivalry between leaders from Mt Kenya East and West as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.

Mt Kenya remains a critical voting bloc in Kenya’s political landscape, expected to heavily influence the upcoming presidential race.
