The family of Rukia Matete, a deaf woman from Matungu Sub-County in Kakamega County, is appealing for assistance to transport her body from Mombasa to their rural home for burial.
Rukia lost her life in a road accident on July 22, 2026, along the Mombasa–Kilifi Road near Mtwapa. Her remains have been kept at Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary in Mombasa as the family struggles to raise the required funds for repatriation.
Funding Needs and Current Efforts
The family estimates the cost of transporting Rukia's body to Kakamega at KShs 200,000. So far, they have collected KShs 100,000 through contributions from relatives and friends but still need to raise the remaining amount.
Disability advocate Jonathan Metet, who is assisting the family, has called on community leaders and well-wishers to help ensure Rukia receives a dignified burial. The transportation is planned for July 30, 2026.
