The Milimani Anti-Corruption Court has granted bail to Julius Irungu Njogu, the principal probation officer at Kangema, who faces charges of bribery involving Ksh150,000.
Irungu was charged with soliciting a Ksh170,000 bribe from Peter Njhia Njuguna on behalf of Kangema Law Courts Senior Principal Magistrate Martin Kinyua Mutegi. The alleged request was made on July 16, 2026, related to a criminal case where Njuguna had been convicted in 2024.
Additionally, Irungu is accused of receiving Ksh150,000 from Njuguna on July 21, 2026, in Kangema Township as part of the corrupt arrangement to influence sentencing.
Court Proceedings and Bail Conditions
During his appearance before Chief Magistrate Harrison Barasa on July 28, 2026, Irungu pleaded not guilty to all charges. He requested reasonable bail, emphasizing his role as a family man with three children and a senior public servant nearing retirement.
He further asked the court to order the prosecution to return his phone if it was not needed as evidence or allow him to change his SIM cards. He also sought access to witness statements related to the case.
The Directorate of Public Prosecutions did not oppose bail. Consequently, the court set bail terms requiring Irungu to post a bond of Ksh800,000 with a surety of equal amount or alternatively pay Ksh400,000 in cash.
