People's Liberation Party leader Martha Karua has strongly condemned the escalating attacks on Linda Mwananchi movement members and leaders, cautioning that such political violence endangers Kenya's constitutional rights and the integrity of the 2027 General Election.
In a statement released on Sunday, Karua decried the use of violence to intimidate political opponents and disrupt public gatherings, citing recent incidents in Kisii, Nyahururu, Murang’a, and Homa Bay counties.
Violent Incidents Across Counties
- In Kisii, a Linda Mwananchi convoy was assaulted by groups armed with clubs and stones, resulting in the death of supporter Vincent Osiemo from his injuries.
- A rally in Nyahururu was forcefully disrupted.
- In Murang’a, Governor Irungu Kang’ata reported that his driver was shot during an attack.
- Homa Bay witnessed groups of armed youths blocking roads, burning tyres, attacking convoys, and preventing political events from proceeding.
Karua also highlighted an incident where individuals forcibly entered a hotel in Homa Bay searching for Linda Mwananchi members. Later, tear gas was deployed against the movement’s convoy, dispersing crowds along the route.
Call for Accountability and Protection of Freedoms
Karua emphasized the dangers of allowing political intolerance and organised violence to persist unchecked, warning that such actions ultimately harm ordinary citizens rather than political financiers.
She urged authorities to investigate who organises, funds, and enables these violent groups, questioning their operations often occurring openly and sometimes even in the presence of security personnel.
Amnesty International Kenya has also condemned the violence, attacks on journalists, and destruction of property during the political activities in Homa Bay. The organisation called for independent investigations and assured protection for journalists, political actors, human rights defenders, businesses, and residents.
