A groundbreaking solar-powered ambulance named Stella Juva has been introduced in Kenya to enhance emergency healthcare delivery in remote areas. Developed by 23 students from Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands, this innovative vehicle runs entirely on solar energy, enabling it to travel up to 715 kilometres on a sunny day without relying on fossil fuels.

The project was executed in partnership with Amref Health Africa, aiming to bring sustainable mobility solutions to emergency medical services. The ambulance features independent solar charging infrastructure, making it suitable for off-grid locations where access to electricity is limited.

During the launch event at Amref International University-Northlands Campus, Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira praised the initiative for merging renewable energy, electric mobility, and healthcare. He highlighted the potential to reduce fuel costs, lower emissions, and alleviate maintenance burdens affecting healthcare systems.

PS Wachira emphasized the importance of testing the ambulance on Kenya's diverse terrains, including Nakuru, Kajiado, and Narok counties, to ensure its effectiveness beyond laboratory conditions. He called on local innovators to transition from prototypes to sustainable, locally manufacturable solutions by fostering partnerships that blend global expertise with local realities.

The Eindhoven University of Technology team arrived in Kenya to conduct real-world trials simulating medical emergencies and challenging driving conditions. Their work exemplifies how technology can address societal challenges and improve healthcare access through clean energy innovation.
