Kenya is confronting a looming maize shortage due to poor rainfall that has led to significant crop failures in key maize-producing regions. The government warns that production could drop below 50 percent in areas traditionally known for high yields, including parts of the Rift Valley and western Kenya.

Widespread Crop Failure Across Regions

Public Service and Special Programmes Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku revealed that crop failure rates have reached up to 75 percent in some areas, raising concerns about food security beyond the usual arid and semi-arid counties. Counties such as Baringo, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Embu, Meru, and several coastal and Lake Basin counties are now also at risk.

Government Response and Financial Implications

In response, the government has prepared emergency measures including the procurement of 414 tonnes of maize for distribution over the next three months. CS Ruku indicated the relief effort could cost close to Sh10 billion, funds which were not initially budgeted for but may be sourced through constitutional contingency provisions.

"This intervention, while necessary, will divert resources from planned development projects," Ruku explained, emphasizing the economic challenges posed by the food crisis.

El Niño Adds to Food Security Concerns

Compounding the situation is the forecast of a strong El Niño event later in the year, expected to bring heavy rains, flooding, and potential crop damage. The Kenya Meteorological Department and government have advised early harvesting and proper crop storage to mitigate losses.

A high-level emergency team led by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki is coordinating preparedness efforts to limit the impact of the anticipated rains and prevent loss of life.
