The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a weather forecast predicting rainfall across 23 counties starting from the night of Wednesday, July 29 through to the evening of Thursday, July 30.
Rainfall and Weather Conditions
Counties expected to experience showers include parts of the Rift Valley and western Kenya such as Uasin Gishu, Bungoma, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Kakamega, Trans-Nzoia, Vihiga, Bomet, Nandi, Meru, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, as well as coastal and central counties including Mombasa, Kwale, Lamu, Nyamira, Kisii, Kirinyaga, Embu, Murang'a, Nyeri, and Nyandarua.
Many of these areas will see light showers and thunderstorms overnight, with sunny intervals during the morning and a return of showers in the afternoon.
Central and Mount Kenya counties such as Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, and Kiambu are forecast to experience a mix of cloudy and sunny spells with occasional light afternoon showers.
Nairobi is expected to have partly cloudy skies overnight, becoming cloudy with sunny intervals in the morning before clearing up to sunny spells by afternoon. Temperatures in the capital will range between 13°C and 25°C.
Winds and Temperature Extremes
Strong southerly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 m/s) are anticipated in northern and coastal counties including Marsabit, Isiolo, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, Tana River, Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kitui.
Temperature variations are notable, with Nyandarua recording the lowest minimum at 7°C, while Mandera and Turkana counties are expected to reach highs of up to 36°C.
Recent Rainfall Observations
Data from the 24 hours ending 9:00 AM on July 28 indicated heavy rainfall, with Korieko ro Miyare station recording over 60mm. Other stations such as Koyoo and Kapsoya reported more than 20mm, while Kisii, St Johns Nyamwaga, and Lower Kuja recorded moderate rainfall amounts.
