Kenya Power has confirmed the full restoration of electricity supply nationwide following a major blackout that affected millions of customers on the night of Wednesday, July 29, 2026.
In an update issued early Thursday morning, the utility reported that power was completely reinstated by 2:00 a.m. after technical teams worked continuously to stabilise the national grid.
Phased Restoration Efforts
The blackout initially impacted Nairobi, the Coast, Mt. Kenya, and parts of the Central Rift, with some areas in the North Rift and Western Kenya remaining connected.
- By 10:11 p.m., power was restored to parts of Nairobi and the Central Rift following the re-energisation of Lanet, Naivasha, and Juja Road substations.
- By 11:32 p.m., electricity returned to Mt. Kenya, North Rift, Western Kenya, South Nyanza, and additional areas of Nairobi.
- The final restoration phase completed at 2:00 a.m. Thursday, covering all remaining affected regions including the Coast.
Public Response and Utility Statement
The unexpected outage sparked frustration among Kenyans, who reported disruptions to businesses, transport, and daily activities on social media.
Kenya Power apologised for the inconvenience and thanked customers for their patience but did not disclose the specific cause of the blackout.
