Kenya’s men’s 3x3 basketball squad recorded their inaugural victory at the 2026 Commonwealth Games with a convincing 22-12 triumph against Jamaica at Glasgow’s SEC Centre on Monday.

After enduring three losses on the opening day, head coach Sylvia Kamau’s strategic tweaks and emphasis on mental resilience helped the team regain momentum on the international stage.

Key Tactical Improvements

Coach Kamau highlighted the team’s enhanced defensive intensity and improved offensive coordination as critical factors in the win. She noted, “We focused on defense and quickness, which we maintained from previous games, and refined our offensive strategy so that everyone contributed either through scoring or assisting.”

She singled out standout performances from players Rodney and David, whose decisive plays boosted the team’s overall performance.

Facing International Pressure

Kamau acknowledged the challenge of competing before a large, enthusiastic crowd, noting that the team’s limited exposure to international 3x3 competitions contributed to initial jitters. “This is a huge stage, and for many, their first Commonwealth Games. The experience of playing in front of such a crowd is invaluable,” she said.

Looking Ahead to Quarter-Finals

With their first win secured, Kenya now turns focus to upcoming matches, aiming to clinch a quarter-final spot. Their next challenge is against Fiji, a strong contender. Kamau expressed confidence, stating, “We must win the next game to reach two wins, and we are ready for the task.”

Celebrating the victory, Kamau declared, “Kenya all the way!”
