Kenya is preparing to welcome more than 10,000 delegates from 40 countries at the 16th Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE), set to take place from October 6 to 8, 2026, at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi. This marks the largest attendance since the event’s inception, reflecting a 30% increase from the previous year’s 7,691 delegates.

The three-day expo will feature over 400 exhibitors and more than 250 vetted international buyers, consolidating its position as East Africa’s premier travel trade event. The surge in participation underscores growing confidence in Kenya’s tourism sector as the country targets five million international visitors by the end of 2027.

Focus on Digital Transformation and AI

Under the theme "Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence: Shaping the Future of Tourism," MKTE 2026 will explore how technology can drive tourism growth across Africa. Discussions will cover artificial intelligence, big data, immersive technologies, digital payments, and smart destination tools aimed at enhancing visitor experiences and destination competitiveness.

Emphasis on MICE Sector Expansion

The expo will also highlight Kenya’s Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) sector, a growing pillar of the tourism strategy. The Kenya MICE Club will facilitate sessions bringing together government and private stakeholders to promote Kenya as a competitive destination for international business events.

Duncan Muriuki, Chair of the Kenya MICE Association, emphasized the sector’s potential to boost tourism revenue by attracting high-value business events and encouraging extended stays through Kenya’s modern facilities and attractive "bleisure" offerings in Nairobi and Mombasa.

Public-Private Collaboration Driving Growth

Kenya Tourism Board CEO June Chepkemei highlighted the importance of data-driven strategies and public-private partnerships in enhancing the sector’s growth. She noted that marketing efforts are informed by consumer insights to convert interest into actual arrivals.

Raymond Cheruiyot, Chairman of the Tour Operators Society of Kenya, praised government initiatives improving visa access and air connectivity, which strengthen Kenya’s appeal to international tourists. He described MKTE as a vital platform for showcasing Kenya’s diverse tourism products and forging strategic partnerships.

Additional Activities and Outlook

The expo will include seminars, business-to-business meetings, and familiarisation trips designed to foster partnerships and generate trade opportunities. Organizers aim to leverage technology and smart destination management to enhance Kenya’s competitiveness while ensuring inclusive tourism growth.
