Kenya has welcomed the decision to proceed with the resumption of joint military training exercises with the United Kingdom at the British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK). Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi described the development as a positive reflection of the enduring defence relationship between the two nations.

Following weeks of uncertainty linked to parliamentary scrutiny over human rights allegations and the pending Kenya-UK Defence Cooperation Agreement, the government confirmed that the planned military exercise, Exercise HARAKA STORM, will take place later this year.

Addressing Concerns and Strengthening Ties

  • Mudavadi highlighted that the resolution of outstanding issues was achieved through dialogue, demonstrating the strength and mutual respect underpinning the bilateral partnership.
  • The National Assembly’s Defence, Intelligence and Foreign Relations Committee had earlier suspended approval of the defence agreement, citing serious concerns including allegations of human rights abuses and environmental damage related to BATUK operations.
  • Despite these challenges, both governments remain committed to accountability and sustaining public confidence in the collaboration.

The Kenya-UK defence cooperation stands as one of Kenya’s oldest military collaborations, providing joint training and capacity building for the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF). "This cooperation not only enhances the operational capabilities of the KDF but also supports regional peace and security," Mudavadi stated. He emphasized that the partnership generates jobs and economic benefits while advancing Kenya’s national interests.

A UK government spokesperson confirmed that Kenya had granted the necessary licences and permissions for Exercise HARAKA STORM to proceed as scheduled. The UK reaffirmed its commitment to deepening military cooperation and maintaining a strategic partnership that benefits both countries.
