Peris Maranga, a Kenyan woman now working as a flight attendant in the United Arab Emirates, has shared the challenging journey that led her to her dream career.
Her story began with her mother taking a loan from a local women's chama to cover essential expenses, including Peris's visa fees, flight ticket, and KSh 15,000 to support her initial stay in Dubai.
With no job offer and no contacts in Dubai, Peris embarked on this journey fueled by her ambitions and her mother’s unwavering support. Prior to departure, she minimized costs by staying with a classmate instead of paying for accommodation, demonstrating her determination to conserve funds.
At Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Peris experienced a mix of excitement and emotion as she prepared to board a plane for the first time, stepping into an unknown environment.
Initial Setback and Return Home
Despite her hopes, Peris struggled to find employment in Dubai. After three months, she returned to Kenya without securing a job, carrying the weight of her mother's financial sacrifice.
However, her mother greeted her with love and encouragement, offering no blame for the unpaid loan. This support helped Peris regain strength and keep faith in her dreams.
Dream Achieved
Eventually, Peris landed a cabin crew position, a role that has taken her around the world and allowed her to witness sunrises from above the clouds.
Reflecting on her journey, she acknowledges that her mother’s belief and the chama loan were the foundation of her success. She cherishes the contrast between the photo capturing her uncertain beginnings and the one marking her achievement.
