Mercy Ruto, a Form Four student at Laliat Secondary School in Kericho County, has captured national attention after a video of her introducing her husband during a public school event went viral.
The event was the launch of National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) projects held at Kiptere Primary School. Mercy was among the beneficiaries invited to share their experiences with the audience.
Mercy’s journey back to education is remarkable. After marrying and having two children, she had dropped out of school. However, with sponsorship from NGAAF, facilitated by Kericho Woman Representative Beatrice Kemei, she was able to resume her studies.
During her speech, Mercy expressed heartfelt gratitude to Kemei for the support that reignited her academic ambitions. The moment became memorable when she paused to introduce her husband, who was present, eliciting laughter and applause from attendees. This gesture highlighted the balance she maintains between her family life and education.
Her story has inspired many as a testament to how targeted educational support can empower young women affected by early marriage and motherhood to continue their education and pursue their dreams.
