Kitutu Chache Member of Parliament John Mtongoi Kibagendi has openly criticized the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), accusing the party of straying from its foundational values. His comments come amid escalating tensions within ODM over its ongoing cooperation with President William Ruto's Kenya Kwanza administration.

In an interview on July 27, 2026, Kibagendi clarified that the political alliance between the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and President Ruto was primarily aimed at stabilizing the country after the nationwide Gen Z protests in June 2024. He emphasized that this partnership was established while Raila was still alive and was not intended to redefine ODM's identity.

Alliance Meant for Stability, Not Merger

"The union was born purely to stabilise the country," Kibagendi explained, adding that Raila Odinga agreed to collaborate with the government to restore calm during a period of heightened political tension. However, Kibagendi argued that the original purpose of this cooperation has been lost over time as some ODM leaders have abandoned the party’s core principles.

Concerns Over Party Direction and Funding

Kibagendi accused certain ODM officials of becoming overly dependent on State House resources, alleging they receive financial support for organizing rallies and empowerment programs. "They line up at State House to pick up money for weekend rallies and weekend empowerment programmes," he stated.

These remarks highlight growing dissatisfaction within ODM, particularly from the Linda Mwananchi faction, which has hinted at forming a new political outfit ahead of the 2027 general elections. The rift reflects deeper divisions between members supporting the government alliance and those advocating a return to ODM's original opposition role.
