Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has revealed that he repeatedly cautioned his predecessor, Rigathi Gachagua, to nurture a strong working relationship with President William Ruto during his tenure as Interior Cabinet Secretary.
Kindiki alleges that despite his efforts to advise Gachagua on managing his political conduct, the former Deputy President dismissed the guidance, which Kindiki believes contributed to Gachagua's eventual impeachment and removal from office in October 2024.
Speaking at the Mt Kenya East Elders Solemn Assembly in Embu, Kindiki stated:
- "I told you, mimi sitaki kukuwa kama wewe" — expressing his frustration over Gachagua's disregard for advice.
- He recounted multiple attempts to urge Gachagua to "stay loyal and maintain a good relationship with the President" to secure his position.
- Kindiki claimed Gachagua looked down on him and questioned his political acumen.
The Deputy President also criticized Gachagua's recent political activities outside government, accusing him of making inflammatory remarks and seeking alliances with opposition figures ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Kindiki challenged Gachagua to wait for the electoral process rather than attempt to destabilize the Kenya Kwanza administration, stating, "Wewe kaa na hawa watu, ngojea next year tukunyoroshe na William Ruto uende nyumbani."
This exchange highlights the growing political rivalry between Kindiki, a key ally of President Ruto, and Gachagua, who is actively promoting the Democracy for Citizens Party and consolidating support in the Mt Kenya region.
The competing narratives from these leaders are expected to intensify political competition in the region as the 2027 elections approach.
Attempts to independently verify the alleged private discussions between Kindiki and Gachagua have been unsuccessful. As of publication, Gachagua had not responded publicly to Kindiki's statements.
