Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has intensified efforts to consolidate support from elders across Mount Kenya, aiming to foster regional unity ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Last week, Kindiki secured blessings from the Njuri Ncheke elders of the Ameru community. On August 15, he addressed thousands of elders at Nembure Stadium in Embu, urging them to collaborate with their counterparts from Mount Kenya West to present a united political front.
Emphasizing the importance of cohesion for development, Kindiki stressed that the two sub-regions must work together to maintain Mount Kenya's influence in national leadership and development agendas.
Criticism of Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua
Kindiki launched a sharp critique of his predecessor, Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of disrespect and divisive politics. He claimed that efforts to encourage Gachagua to adopt a more conciliatory approach were rebuffed, leading to ongoing political hostility.
“Gachagua’s actions seek to divide Mount Kenya and undermine its access to national resources,” Kindiki said, labeling him as detrimental to the region’s unity.
Elders Endorse Kindiki’s Leadership
The gathering included elders from Njuri Ncheke, Nyaangi Ndiriri, Kiama Kia Muembu, and the Mwea Council of Elders. They unanimously called for recognition of Kindiki’s status as Deputy President and urged Mount Kenya West elders to support him unconditionally.
The elders declared Kindiki the political spokesperson for Mount Kenya, emphasizing that regional political discourse should be channeled through him. They highlighted Mount Kenya East’s historical support for leaders from the western sub-region, including presidents and deputy presidents.
Call for Dialogue and Development
Kindiki backed the elders’ proposal for formal dialogue between Mount Kenya East and West to unify their political and development strategies. He pledged respect for any agreements reached through these talks.
The elders also urged swift completion of key infrastructure projects such as the Makutano-Embu-Chuka-Meru-Maua dual carriageway and the Nithi Bridge to spur regional development.
