A recent Tifa survey has identified key obstacles preventing many Kenyans from registering as voters ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Main Barriers to Voter Registration
- Absence of National ID or Required Documents: The leading cause, cited by 37% of respondents overall and 50% of young adults aged 18-24.
- Lack of Time: Reported by 22% of those unregistered, highlighting busy schedules as a significant challenge.
- Disinterest in Politics: Also accounting for 22%, indicating apathy or disengagement with the political process.
Additional Challenges
The poll further reveals that older citizens, particularly those over 45, are more likely to express concerns about the registration process itself and skepticism about the credibility of election outcomes. Structural issues such as administrative difficulties and limited access to registration centers also contribute to low registration rates.
These findings underscore the need for targeted interventions to address documentation barriers, improve accessibility, and rebuild trust in electoral processes to enhance voter participation in Kenya's upcoming elections.
