Laikipia Senator John Kinyua has appealed to the national government to fast-track the renewal of the agreement governing the British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK). He emphasized the unit’s significant contribution to employment and economic activity in Laikipia County.
Speaking at a church service at AIPCA Nturukuma Church in Nanyuki on July 27, 2026, Kinyua acknowledged ongoing debates about the Kenya-UK defence partnership. He urged that the livelihoods of residents dependent on BATUK’s presence be a priority in these discussions.
Economic Impact of BATUK
The senator highlighted that BATUK has become a vital economic partner in Laikipia. Its operations provide direct jobs and support numerous local businesses, including traders, transporters, accommodation providers, and suppliers.
Kinyua noted fluctuations in local business activity correlate with the presence of British troops, underscoring BATUK’s role in stimulating the county’s economy.
Call for Agreement Renewal and Community Investment
Kinyua urged government officials to finalise the agreement renewal promptly to ensure stability for workers and businesses linked to BATUK. He stressed that concerns about training locations should not overshadow the broader economic benefits.
He also encouraged BATUK to increase its community investments, particularly in infrastructure and social projects such as roads and schools, as part of its corporate social responsibility.
Respect for Kenyan Law
While supporting the renewal, the senator insisted that any offences committed by BATUK personnel in Kenya must be subject to Kenyan law. He affirmed confidence in the country’s justice system to handle legal matters fairly, regardless of nationality.
Kinyua concluded by reaffirming Laikipia leaders’ commitment to working with the national government to balance economic benefits with addressing community concerns through appropriate legal and administrative channels.
