A Lamu court has sentenced Abdulrahman Issa to serve 10 years in prison or pay a Sh50 million fine following his conviction for trafficking narcotic drugs.
Resident Magistrate Flavian Mulama found Issa guilty of possessing and trafficking cannabis sativa and diazepam, offences committed on March 12, 2026, in Tchundwa Village, Lamu East Sub-county, contrary to the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act.
The prosecution presented evidence that Issa was carrying an orange bag containing 250 grams of cannabis, 10 diazepam tablets, a partially smoked bhang roll, and drug paraphernalia including a razor blade and metallic spoon.
During the trial, Issa denied the charges, claiming the drugs were found at his father's home after his arrest alongside two other men. However, he failed to call any witnesses to support his defence.
Magistrate Mulama ruled that the prosecution's case was credible and consistent, supported by three witnesses and exhibits, while Issa's denials were unsubstantiated. The court also noted that the seized items suggested drug trafficking rather than personal use.
A Government Chemist confirmed the substances were narcotic drugs, and this report went uncontested by the defence.
Issa was informed of his right to appeal the conviction or sentence within 14 days.
