Lawyer Ndegwa Njiru has publicly declared his support for Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka's presidential campaign for the 2027 general elections. Njiru emphasized the importance of having a president with a strong legal background to revive respect for the Constitution, rule of law, and public institutions in Kenya.

Legal Expertise as a Key Qualification

Speaking at Tseikuru Faith Baptist Presbyterian Church in Kitui County on July 26, 2026, Njiru highlighted that Kenya's current challenges stem from a disregard for legal frameworks rather than a shortage of economic or technical skills.

He noted the academic backgrounds of previous presidents, stating, “Moi was a teacher, Kibaki and Uhuru were economists, and then we chose a botanist.” Njiru argued that the country now requires leadership grounded in legal education.

Vision for a New Republic

Njiru outlined that a Kalonzo presidency would prioritize rebuilding constitutionalism and strengthening institutions responsible for upholding the law. He described this approach as establishing a "new republic" founded on constitutional respect, human rights protection, and accountable governance.

  • Restoration of the rule of law and constitutionalism
  • Protection of human rights
  • Reinforcement of public institutions
  • Enhanced fight against corruption
  • Inclusive policy formulation and implementation

He emphasized that these reforms would help restore hope and trust in Kenya's governance structures.

Growing Opposition Support for Kalonzo

Njiru's endorsement adds to increasing backing for Kalonzo within opposition ranks ahead of the 2027 elections. The Wiper leader is positioning himself as a unifying candidate capable of bridging divides across the country.

Earlier in July, former Attorney General Justin Muturi also expressed willingness to support Kalonzo should he not secure the opposition ticket, highlighting efforts toward opposition unity. Kalonzo welcomed Muturi's support and pledged to back any chosen opposition candidate if not selected himself.
