Lilian Odira, the reigning World 800m champion, is focused on clinching the Commonwealth Games title after qualifying for the semi-finals in Glasgow, Scotland.
Making her debut at the Commonwealth Games, Odira views the event as a critical step towards the World Athletics Ultimate Championship scheduled for September 11-13 in Budapest, Hungary.
In a post-race interview, Odira emphasized her dual goals: "The Commonwealth Games are a build-up for the Ultimate Championships at the end of the season. Nonetheless, I’m here to make a statement and I’m going for a medal."
On Monday, Odira won her 800m heat in 2:01.05, outperforming competitors including Great Britain’s Isabelle Boffey and Jamaica’s Kelly-Ann Beckford. She described the race as manageable, noting her primary objective was to secure a spot in the semi-finals.
Despite challenging weather conditions marked by wind and cold, Odira reported feeling physically strong and adaptable. "We have to adjust to the conditions—be it sunny, windy or rainy—because that’s what we face in other countries and even back at home," she said.
Odira, 27, aims to add the Commonwealth title to her world championship crown won last year. The 800m semi-finals and final are set for Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.
