Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has disclosed that the Linda Mwananchi movement is actively considering fielding a presidential candidate in the upcoming general election. This comes amid rising public demand for a fresh political direction in Kenya.
Speaking on July 28, 2026, Sifuna noted that pressure to present an alternative to President William Ruto’s administration is mounting not only from within the movement but also from citizens across the country.
Assessing Nationwide Support
While enthusiasm is high, Sifuna emphasized that the movement has yet to finalize its decision. Tours are ongoing in the 47 counties to gauge the level of support, with fewer than 20 counties visited so far.
He highlighted the constitutional requirement for a presidential candidate to secure at least 25% of votes in half of the counties, underscoring the challenge ahead.
Calls for Patience and Change
The senator urged supporters to be patient as the movement evaluates whether the recent surge in interest can be maintained nationwide. He attributed the growing appeal to widespread concerns over taxation, unemployment, and the escalating cost of living.
“There is a clear yearning for new leadership and a break from the current policies,” Sifuna said, adding that those advocating for change must be prepared to lead.
He concluded, “We will not ignore the call of the country or the call of a generation.”
