The Linda Mwananchi movement has announced plans to evolve into a formal political party as it prepares for the 2027 General Election. The move was confirmed by Suba South MP Caroli Omondi on July 28, 2026.
Omondi outlined that the party will be grounded in the principles of Social Market Democracy, emphasizing three key pillars:
- Democratic Governance
- Free Market Economy
- Social Justice
He explained that the transformation is driven by the movement's growing support base that spans across political divides, necessitating a clear political identity and direction.
"We have reached a point where we have to clearly give our supporters and the nation more details about what our plans are. There is a lot of support for Linda Mwananchi and a very strong desire for change," Omondi said during a media interview.
Presidential Candidate and Coalition Plans
The new party intends to nominate Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as its presidential candidate. Following this, it plans to engage in coalition talks with other opposition parties, aiming to build a broad alliance similar to the one that successfully contested the 2002 General Election.
Veteran politicians such as James Orengo and Babu Owino are expected to lead the coalition negotiations once the party finalizes its presidential nomination.
The announcement marks a significant shift for Linda Mwananchi, transitioning from a pressure group originally linked to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) into a national political entity focused on governance reforms, economic liberalisation, and social justice.
