The Linda Mwananchi movement staged a vibrant political tour across Western Kenya, drawing large crowds in Bungoma County on Sunday as Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna made a spirited homecoming parade.
Supporters thronged the streets, responding enthusiastically to calls from regional leaders urging the opposition to unite behind Sifuna’s bid for the presidency in 2027.
Opposition Leaders Endorse Sifuna
- Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya described Sifuna as the strongest opposition candidate against President William Ruto, urging the united opposition to back him: "If they dish out money you take it. I want to challenge the united opposition to stand up and say Sifuna tosha."
- Siaya Governor James Orengo added that President Ruto’s popularity has declined among Kenyans.
Plans for a New Political Vehicle
Senator Sifuna and other opposition figures hinted at forming a new political party, expressing dissatisfaction with ODM’s current direction.
- Sifuna accused ODM of abandoning its founding principles and effectively aligning with President Ruto, saying, "It is evident that they have sold off our party to William Ruto, now allow us to look for a different alternative."
- Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi emphasized inclusivity in the new party, stating it would welcome all supporters.
Demand for Transparent Elections
The group also challenged the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to ensure a credible and transparent election process in 2027.
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino warned, "Our votes will not be stolen. We will get vehicles and travel to Nairobi after casting our votes to protect them."
Extensive Campaign Trail
Prior to Bungoma, the Linda Mwananchi brigade toured Kiminini, Kamukuywa, Kimilili, and Chwele, intensifying efforts to galvanize support ahead of next year’s polls.
