Suba South Member of Parliament Caroli Omondi has revealed plans for the Linda Mwananchi movement to transition into an independent political party ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In a televised interview on July 28, 2026, Omondi explained that the movement, initially a faction within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), has expanded its support base beyond ODM’s ranks, necessitating a formal political structure.
Formation of a New Party
Omondi stated that Linda Mwananchi will nominate Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as its presidential candidate. Following this, the party intends to engage with other opposition leaders, including James Orengo and Babu Owino, to forge a united coalition aimed at challenging the incumbent in 2027.
Break with ODM
The announcement coincides with Omondi’s sharp criticism of ODM, which he described as having lost its foundational values and no longer representing the interests of ordinary Kenyans. He declared the party "politically dead" and distanced Linda Mwananchi from ODM’s current trajectory.
Omondi, a prominent figure in the movement, has opposed ODM’s collaboration with President William Ruto’s government and previously indicated he would not run for re-election on an ODM ticket. His statements highlight growing fractures within the opposition as new political alliances take shape ahead of the elections.
