Kenyan actress and Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o has revealed the transformation of her Los Angeles residence, a project she undertook with the support of Crate and Barrel’s Design Desk team.
Drawing inspiration from the late Cicely Tyson's reflections on home as a source of grounding, faith, and connection, Lupita sought to create a living space that embodies these values. She described the process as fulfilling a long-held dream that she initially found challenging to realize on her own.
Collaborative Design Process
The Crate and Barrel team engaged closely with Lupita, asking detailed questions to understand both her style preferences and the functional needs of her home. Instead of initial sketches, they presented polished 3D renderings that clearly illustrated their vision, winning Lupita’s approval immediately.
She praised the team’s work, stating they "knocked it out of the park" with the first draft and rated the experience a perfect 10 out of 10.
Features of the Redesigned Space
- An outdoor patio featuring decorative wall panels
- A built-in bench with comfortable cushions
- Stylish planters enhancing the natural ambiance
- A fire pit adding warmth and character to the terrace
Lupita, who was born in Mexico and raised in Kenya, rose to international acclaim after winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in "12 Years a Slave" in 2014. Beyond her acting career, she is celebrated for her distinct style and cultural influence.
This home redesign was part of a paid partnership with Crate and Barrel, which Lupita acknowledged openly, emphasizing the personal significance of the project beyond its commercial aspect.
