Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo has disclosed that he was offered Ksh10 million to back the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua but declined the offer due to attached conditions.
During a TV interview on July 30, 2026, Maanzo confirmed that some senators received financial incentives to support the impeachment motion. He said the bribe came with strict stipulations on how he should vote, which he rejected.
"I was approached and offered Ksh10 million, but the condition was clear: if I accepted, I had to vote yes. If I took the money and voted no or failed to comply, there would be consequences," Maanzo explained. "I decided to vote no despite the risks."
Junet Mohammed Alleges Widespread Bribery
National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohammed had earlier alleged that MPs were paid during the impeachment process. Speaking at a political rally on July 26, 2026, Junet claimed an accounting officer managed the funds, naming a legislator as responsible.
Junet stated, "When we were impeaching Gachagua, money was moving around in Parliament. The accounting officer was a legislator called Cheruiyot."
Gachagua Calls on Judiciary to Consider Bribery Claims
Following these allegations, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua urged the Judiciary to take into account statements by Junet Mohammed and MP Phelix Odiwuor Jalang’o, who both acknowledged that bribes were given to influence the impeachment vote.
Speaking from his Wamunyoro residence on July 29, 2026, Gachagua said, "They have started speaking out. Junet Mohammed and Jalang’o admitted money was given to remove me from office. This should be considered by the courts."
