Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) deputy leader Cleophas Malala has asserted that if President William Ruto wins a second term in the upcoming 2027 election, he and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua will face imprisonment.
Speaking during a radio interview on July 29, 2026, Malala emphasized their commitment to ensuring President Ruto serves only one term. "If Ruto is re-elected, Gachagua and I will be jailed; that is why we remain vigilant," Malala stated.
Malala highlighted that both he and Gachagua were instrumental in helping Ruto clinch the presidency in 2022 but are now focused on voting him out in 2027. He downplayed concerns about Gachagua potentially becoming the united opposition’s presidential candidate, insisting their priority is unseating Ruto.
Gachagua’s Apology and Vote Mobilization Plan
Days earlier, Rigathi Gachagua acknowledged the significant role Mount Kenya played in Ruto's 2022 victory, describing their support as a "fatal mistake" that contributed nearly half of the votes for the Kenya Kwanza administration.
"I want to admit that I, along with the people of Mount Kenya, bear responsibility for the current challenges facing our country. We delivered almost half of the votes that brought this government to power. To all Kenyans, we apologize," Gachagua said.
He further revealed plans to mobilize at least 7.1 million votes from the Mount Kenya region in 2027 to remove President Ruto from office, matching the number of votes Ruto received nationally in the previous election.
