Manchester City's new era under Enzo Maresca started with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Bournemouth at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. The winning goal came in stoppage time from Josko Gvardiol, who scored after a VAR review overturned an offside call.

City had trailed to a first-half strike by Marcus Tavernier but were revived when Marc Guehi equalised with a header in the 84th minute. Gvardiol's late finish secured all three points in Maresca's Premier League debut, following a recent Community Shield defeat to Arsenal.

Meanwhile, Liverpool, also under a new manager, Andoni Iraola, fought back to earn a 2-2 draw at Newcastle United. Anthony Elanga gave Newcastle an early lead before Cody Gakpo levelled for Liverpool shortly after halftime. Joe Willock restored Newcastle's advantage, but Dominik Szoboszlai converted a penalty in the ninth minute of stoppage time to deny the home side victory.

Both Newcastle and Liverpool paid tribute to former Newcastle manager and football legend Kevin Keegan, who passed away in July.

Elsewhere, Aston Villa endured a difficult start to their campaign, falling 4-0 to Brighton & Hove Albion. All goals were scored before halftime, including an own goal by Victor Lindelof and a brace from Jack Hinshelwood. Villa's new signing Joao Gomes was also sent off during the match.
