Kenyan middle-distance athlete Marion Jepchumba is set to compete at the upcoming World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Oregon with hopes of securing a medal before embarking on her studies in the United States.
The 18-year-old recently transitioned from the 400m to the 800m event and will next month begin her academic and athletic career at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, supported by an athletics scholarship under the Nebraska Cornhuskers program.
Jepchumba shared, "In April last year, I decided to study in the USA. After a year of searching, I secured a scholarship at Nebraska-Lincoln in August. I obtained my visa in April and am now preparing to start my studies."
She believes that training in the United States will enhance her development as she pursues her long-term goal of representing Kenya at the 2028 Olympic Games.
Jepchumba is part of Team Kenya’s squad for the World U-20 Championships scheduled from August 5 to 9, alongside fellow 800m runner Nancy Jepng'etich. She enters the competition with a personal best of 2:05.61, recorded on May 23, 2026, and is confident about contending for a podium finish.
Looking ahead, she said:
