Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi has confirmed that he maintains regular communication with former Deputy President and Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua. However, Wamumbi clarified that it is Gachagua who initiates their conversations, not the other way around.

Speaking on a local television station on July 30, 2026, Wamumbi dismissed claims that he seeks out Gachagua, stating their latest exchange occurred the previous night.

Firm Commitment to UDA

The MP reiterated his political allegiance to the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), ruling out any plans to join the DCP. Wamumbi emphasized his role as Mathira’s representative under UDA and expressed confidence in the party’s direction.

"I am a member of the ruling UDA party and will remain so. I am the MP for Mathira and aligned with Gachagua, and indeed we talk. The last time we spoke was yesterday evening. He is the one who contacts me," Wamumbi stated.

He further criticized the DCP for lacking a clear agenda, vision, or plan to unite Kenyans and build the nation.

Private Talks and Money Requests

Wamumbi also revealed that during private discussions, he told Gachagua to stop requesting money, as he does not have funds to give. He accused the former deputy president of misrepresenting their private conversations when addressing the public, urging him to stop selectively disclosing their exchanges.

These comments follow Gachagua’s recent disclosure of WhatsApp conversations with Wamumbi before and after the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election. Gachagua claimed Wamumbi advised him on political strategy and later urged him to reduce attacks on President William Ruto.

Wamumbi had previously acknowledged their WhatsApp communication but criticized Gachagua for publicizing private messages, asserting he holds the full records of their chats.
