Methu Calls on Ruto to Contest Gachagua, Not Drag Uhuru into Political Feud

Nyandarua Senator John Methu has urged President William Ruto to direct his political contest towards Rigathi Gachagua, leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), rather than involving retired President Uhuru Kenyatta in his battles with the opposition.

Speaking on August 15, 2026, at a DCP rally in Elburgon, Nakuru County, Methu portrayed Gachagua as the most formidable contender against Ruto in the upcoming 2027 General Election. He emphasized Gachagua’s political strength by referencing Uhuru Kenyatta’s legacy.

"Let me tell you, there is a man called Uhuru Kenyatta. If you want a real man to compete with him, that man is Rigathi Gachagua," Methu stated.

Methu also criticized President Ruto’s recent political engagements in Eldoret, suggesting that Ruto is feeling pressure from opposition mobilization in the Rift Valley, traditionally considered his stronghold. He remarked, "You used to act very clever, but now I see you running to Eldoret to complain."

The comments coincide with increasing grassroots campaigns by Gachagua and his DCP allies as they position themselves as a key opposition force ahead of the 2027 elections. Methu’s remarks highlight a contrast between the political influence of former President Uhuru Kenyatta and the current momentum behind Gachagua’s bid to challenge the Ruto administration.

Gachagua Defends Uhuru from Attacks

In a related development, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua publicly defended Uhuru Kenyatta during a rally at Kamwangi Shopping Centre in Gatundu South on April 5, 2026. Gachagua urged President Ruto to stop targeting Uhuru with insults, emphasizing that the former president deserves peace after retirement.

"Since I met my elder brother, President Uhuru Kenyatta, Ruto and his allies have been complaining as if Riggy G and Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta are inseparable. They know once we unite, it is unbreakable," Gachagua said.

He accused Ruto of deploying young leaders to insult Uhuru and insisted that the political contest should be between himself and Ruto. "Uhuru Kenyatta is our fourth president. He has retired and gone to rest with his family. He is not part of this rivalry. I am the one fighting you," Gachagua added.
