The National Economic Development Party (NEDP), under the leadership of former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko, has made significant inroads in Mombasa’s Changamwe constituency following a wave of defections from major political parties.
Among those who recently joined NEDP is parliamentary aspirant Abdi Dahib, formerly of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), who was unveiled as the party's candidate for Changamwe. Several ward-level candidates also shifted allegiance from UDA, ODM, Wiper, and Jubilee parties.
Key Defectors Join NEDP
- Asha Abdala and Shamza Mohamed (Port Reitz Ward) – from UDA
- Sophia Bonaya (Kipevu Ward) – from UDA
- Fatma Zadin and Michael Nato (Chaani Ward) – from UDA
- Gordon Opiyo (Airport Ward) – from ODM
- Gina Bernard (Airport Ward) – from Wiper
Additionally, several former party officials and grassroots leaders have aligned with NEDP, including:
- Jane Mwadembo, former UDA Changamwe Sub-County Chairlady
- William Njoroge, former UDA Airport Ward Youth Leader
- Saida Abdala, former UDA Changamwe Sub-County Youth Leader
- Enos Mulama, former Wiper Airport Ward Secretary
- Faira Kikuyu, former Jubilee Changamwe Organising Secretary
- Vicky Mwendwa, former Wiper Mama County Coordinator
- Aisha Kasin, former Wiper Deputy Women Leader
Sonko Outlines Vision for Kenya
Speaking during the unveiling ceremony, Mike Sonko highlighted the growing confidence in NEDP as a rising political force. He emphasized the party’s commitment to youth empowerment, job creation, and community transformation.
“Our goal is to build a united, prosperous, and inclusive Kenya by creating opportunities for the youth, fighting unemployment, restoring hope, and transforming communities,” Sonko stated.
He further pledged to expand NEDP’s reach nationwide, interpreting the defections as a strong endorsement of the party’s agenda.
This surge in defections and grassroots mobilization reflects intensifying political competition in Mombasa County as parties prepare for the 2027 General Election.
