National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula has dismissed Senator Boni Khalwale's assertion that he was chased away during a condolence visit to the senator's home following the death of Khalwale's wife.

Wetang'ula recounted that on August 20, he visited Khalwale accompanied by over ten lawmakers, bringing financial support from both himself and President William Ruto. He described the visit as warm, with Khalwale personally escorting him to his vehicle before he left.

Addressing stakeholders and business leaders in Bungoma County on August 22, Wetang'ula expressed surprise at Khalwale's later claims of expulsion. He suggested that Khalwale was leveraging the funeral for political gain, noting their longstanding political association and support during by-election campaigns.

Wetang'ula stated:

  • He informed Khalwale beforehand that he would not attend the funeral due to prior commitments.
  • Khalwale acknowledged him as a senior Luhya leader and promised political support.
  • The speaker was shocked by Khalwale's contradictory statements made on the day of the burial.

Meanwhile, Senator Khalwale told mourners at the burial on August 21 that he had discouraged President Ruto from attending, citing concerns over political activities surrounding the funeral. He referenced an empowerment event in Murhanda where KSh 5 million was reportedly brought in to influence local residents, which he wanted to avoid impacting the funeral atmosphere.

The burial was attended mainly by opposition figures, including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, whom Khalwale supports for president, contrasting with Wetang'ula's backing of President Ruto's re-election bid.

President Ruto and First Lady Rachel had previously extended condolences to the Khalwale family on August 15, offering prayers for comfort after the loss.
