Murang'a Woman Representative Betty Maina has dismissed accusations from former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua that she is leveraging the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) to pressure President William Ruto.
Gachagua alleged during a television interview that Maina threatened to defect to DCP and secure a senior role if sidelined by the president. He also claimed she had sponsored security personnel involved in disruptions at DCP rallies and that President Ruto had distanced himself from her.
Maina responded firmly on July 27, labeling the claims as "cheap propaganda" and urging Gachagua to refrain from involving her in his political narratives. She challenged him to focus on political rivals at his level rather than targeting her.
Highlighting her continued rapport with President Ruto, Maina pointed to a recent appointment of Kuria Wa Thuita as commissioner by the president as evidence against any alleged fallout. She also noted her public criticism of Gachagua on Inooro TV and the positive reception of her recent rally in Murang'a.
Regarding the suggestion of her joining DCP, Maina was unequivocal: "You are not an option." She emphasized her principles and lack of confidence in Gachagua's leadership, stating she would never align herself with him politically.
This exchange reflects ongoing tensions between Gachagua and some Mt. Kenya legislators loyal to President Ruto, following Gachagua’s impeachment and his accusations of sabotage at DCP events.
