Members of Parliament from Mt Kenya allied to the Kenya Kwanza administration have dismissed demands by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) for a 50-50 government power-sharing arrangement and the Deputy President (DP) seat.
Addressing supporters in Mwea, Igamba Ng'ombe MP Patrick Munene criticized ODM National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed for pushing for the DP position despite ODM joining the government through a broad-based coalition.
Munene said: "Junet Mohamed did not elect this government. He should not demand the DP seat. Let him focus on ODM."
Munene, along with Mwea MP Mary Maingi and Kirinyaga Central MP Gachoki Gitari, also pledged to defend DP Kithure Kindiki from political attacks and expressed confidence in his future presidential bid.
Munene added: "We will fight for Kindiki even in his 2032 presidential bid. Kindiki will be on the presidential ballot in 2032."
The MPs rejected claims by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua that he would direct Mt Kenya voters' choices, with Munene describing such remarks as bitterness following Gachagua's impeachment.
Kirinyaga Central MP Gitari disputed Public Service CS Geoffrey Ruku's suggestion to divide the Mt Kenya region, equating it to ODM's internal splits. He urged Ruku to resign if he wished to engage in politics.
Meanwhile, Maingi emphasized that Kirinyaga has historically been part of Mt Kenya East, highlighting her efforts to establish a Huduma Centre in Mwea to serve the community.
