Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has downplayed the recent surge in opposition political activities, describing them as confused and short-lived. Speaking at a political event on July 25, 2026, Mudavadi compared the opposition’s momentum to a "newspaper fire" that ignites quickly but soon dies out.
He called on residents to firmly support President William Ruto and the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), highlighting the ongoing cooperation between Kenya Kwanza and leaders across the political spectrum.
Mudavadi’s Critique of Opposition
"Raila Odinga was the true opposition. This current opposition is confused," Mudavadi stated, mocking the rising opposition rallies, including those organized by the Linda Mwananchi movement in Western Kenya.
"It’s like a newspaper fire. It flares up fast and then quickly dies down. This wave will end soon," he added, expressing confidence that the opposition’s enthusiasm would not last.
Call for Unity Behind Ruto
Mudavadi urged supporters in Western Kenya to unite behind President Ruto and the UDA party. He emphasized that the Kenya Kwanza government continues to work broadly with leaders who previously belonged to other parties, including ODM.
"Let us stand firm and join UDA, the party of Honorable William Ruto. We are working inclusively because some who were with ODM have joined us in the government," he said.
Linda Mwananchi Movement’s Grassroots Push
The Linda Mwananchi movement, led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and backed by several opposition figures, has intensified grassroots mobilization across Western Kenya ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Senator Eugene Wamalwa affirmed the unity among opposition groups, stating, "United Opposition and Linda Mwananchi, all of us are in WANTAM, and we are working closely to become one team."
Earlier in July, Mudavadi questioned the presidential ambitions of opposition leaders, stressing that winning the presidency requires more than attracting crowds.
Funding Strategy for Linda Mwananchi
During a rally in Trans Nzoia County, Senator Sifuna revealed that Linda Mwananchi relies on small contributions from ordinary Kenyans rather than large donations from wealthy individuals.
"People say we have no money, but in less than three days, we have raised Ksh3 million through our paybill," Sifuna said, rejecting offers from wealthy donors including COTU Secretary-General Francis Atwoli.
"I do not want your money, sir. I prefer to be indebted to Kenyans who give me Ksh10 than to accept large sums from a few individuals," he added.
