Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi is ramping up efforts to reclaim his political foothold in Western Kenya, a region pivotal for the 2027 General Election. He plans to dedicate more time to rally support for President William Ruto’s re-election bid, recognizing Western Kenya's significant voter base.
In recent weeks, Mudavadi has embarked on a grassroots campaign, engaging communities across the region to reconnect with voters and reinforce Kenya Kwanza’s presence. On July 10, he publicly declared his return to active regional politics, committing to be more visible on the ground after spending the past three years focused on his role as Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs.
"I am now back. From now henceforth, I am going to be on the ground with you so we can listen to each other, play politics together and move forward in an organised manner like brothers and sisters," Mudavadi said during his tour.
His strategy includes a series of rallies highlighting Kenya Kwanza’s achievements and plans, alongside targeted mobilization of the Mulembe community residing in Nairobi and other urban areas. This outreach encourages voter registration and participation from those unlikely to travel home for elections.
However, Mudavadi faces stiff competition from Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, whose Linda Mwananchi Movement is gaining traction in Western Kenya. Veteran leaders like former Westlands MP Fred Gumo have endorsed Sifuna, calling for a generational shift in regional leadership.
Political analyst Joseph Mutua notes that while Mudavadi’s established reputation is an asset, reconnecting with voters will require robust grassroots engagement and a compelling political message to counter Sifuna’s appeal, especially among younger voters.
