The North East Ambulance Service deployed 14 resources to the scene, including emergency ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic team, a hazardous area response unit, and a doctor from the Great North Air Ambulance Service.
Despite the efforts of emergency personnel, several patients were confirmed to have died at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the exact number of fatalities.
