Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced fresh leadership appointments to two key government agencies while intensifying efforts against illicit alcohol and drug abuse.
New Appointments to PBO-R and NACADA
On July 24, 2026, Murkomen appointed Adan Haji Ali as Non-Executive Chairperson of the Public Benefit Organizations Regulatory Authority (PBO-R) for a three-year term. This appointment, published in the government Gazette, supersedes a previous appointment from 2023 and is made under the Public Benefit Organizations Act, 2013.
In a separate Gazette notice issued the same day, Sophie Chepkorir Sang was named a member of the Board of the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), also for a three-year term. Sang's appointment is pursuant to the NACADA Act.
Three-Week Operation Against Illicit Alcohol and Drugs
The leadership changes coincide with Murkomen's announcement of a targeted security operation in Keringet, Nakuru County, aimed at curbing illicit alcohol and drug trafficking. Speaking at a public baraza on July 25, the CS revealed that a special police unit from Nairobi will be deployed for three weeks to lead the crackdown.
- The operation will focus on eliminating illegal brews such as chang’aa, sachet liquor, and cannabis.
- Twenty new police officers will be assigned to Keringet, replacing personnel deemed ineffective due to misconduct.
- Officers found drinking on duty will be sent for rehabilitation.
- Murkomen warned brewers and sellers of illicit alcohol that any continuation of the trade will result in immediate arrest and prosecution.
The CS emphasized that the crackdown is part of a broader government initiative to restore law and order and protect public health from the dangers of unregulated substances.
