Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has cast doubt on the sustainability of the Linda Mwananchi opposition movement, despite its growing popularity in Western Kenya.

Speaking in Emuhaya Constituency, Vihiga County, on July 25, Mudavadi likened the movement, led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, to a fleeting newspaper fire that flares up quickly but soon dies out.

Comparing opposition forces

Mudavadi contrasted Linda Mwananchi with the late Raila Odinga, whom he described as the "real opposition." He suggested that current challengers lack the resilience and substance to mount a lasting challenge to President William Ruto’s government.

"Raila Odinga was the real opposition. These other ones are confused, they are like paper tiger, a newspaper fire which lights up before going off very fast. They will be finished very fast," Mudavadi said.

Call for unity behind UDA

During the same address, Mudavadi urged Kenyans to support the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), highlighting the inclusive nature of the current government, which includes members from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

"Let us stay united and support the United Democratic Alliance which is being led by President William Ruto, and we are working in the broad-based government in which we have those from ODM who came to work with us," he added.

Linda Mwananchi’s growing presence

The remarks come as Linda Mwananchi continues to gain traction, drawing large crowds during rallies across the country. On the same day Mudavadi spoke, the movement held a well-attended rally in Trans Nzoia County.

Senator Edwin Sifuna has been touted as the movement’s preferred presidential candidate for the 2027 elections, but Mudavadi remains skeptical about whether the public enthusiasm will translate into actual electoral support.
