Nairobi was hit by a significant power outage on the evening of Wednesday, July 29, 2026, affecting large parts of the city including the central business district and major residential areas. The blackout also extended to the Coast region, Mt Kenya, and parts of the Central Rift.
Kenya Power issued a notification at 9:05 pm confirming the blackout and noted that while these regions were impacted, parts of the North Rift and Western areas continued to receive electricity.
The outage disrupted normal activities, forcing many businesses to rely on backup generators, with some small traders closing early due to the prolonged loss of power. Critical facilities such as hospitals and banks managed to operate with standby power but experienced initial interruptions.
Kenya Power dispatched technical teams to address the issue and restore electricity as quickly as possible. However, the company did not immediately disclose the cause of the blackout.
Customers were advised to remain patient as engineers worked through the night to stabilise the power network and resume normal supply.
